Ecstatic Dance FAQ

What is Inner Journeys?

Inner Journeys is an enriching life practice that encompasses Dance, Movement, Breath, Sound, Meditation and Stillness. This practice invites you to embrace your whole being, tuning into your truest essence and to access the Freedom within you.  Inner Journeys offers knowledge, awareness and embodiment of Self into all aspects of Life through workshops, weekly series, private sessions, retreats, and trainings.

What are the benefits of Inner Journeys Ecstatic Dance?

Participants come for mindful movement, to raise their heart rate, breathe and sweat; getting their daily work out. There are also those who desire to connect to the deeper, more expanded aspects of who they are, relaxing the mind and opening into the heart – accessing an internal field of wholeness.

Inner Journeys offers participants an opportunity to step back from who they think they are, and really experience the being inside the body. It is a beautiful transformational journey, offering insights and clarity in all aspects of Life, through the experience of dance!

What Do I Wear To Class?
  • Wear comfortable clothing that you feel good moving in.
  • It’s always ideal to bring layers as we do both movement and stillness in this practice.
What Do I Bring To Class?
  • Water bottle
  • Your presence
  • An Open Mind
  • Yoga mat (optional for laying down on at the end of class)
  • Cushion (optional for sitting in opening and closing circles)
  • Altar item (optional)
Do I Need Any Prior Dance Experience?
  • No Previous Experience Needed
What If I Get Tired?
  • This practice is about listening to your body.
Where Do I Put My Keys And Cell Phone?
  • There are cubby shelves in the studio where you can place all of your belongings.
  • Shoes stay downstairs on the mats by the front door and your coats can be hung up downstairs also.
What If I Have To Leave Early?
  • These dances are mapped to experience a lot within its time period. It’s preferred that you don’t leave before the class is complete. If it is necessary to leave before hand, it is important to tell your facilitator prior to the class starting so that you two may have a clear understanding as to the time as well as the phase within the journey.

What are the benefits of Conscious Breathwork?

For those of you who have yet to experience this powerful practice, here are just some of the benefits of Conscious Breathwork:

What Do I Wear To Class?
    • Comfortable loose clothing for all temperatures.
    What Do I Bring To Class?
    • Pillow*
    • Yoga mat* / Thermarest
    • Blanket* (1-2)
    • Intention for your breath journey
    • Bolster or extra pillow for your comfort.
    • If you are asthmatic, please bring your inhaler

    Do I Need Any Prior Experience?
    • No previous experience is required.
    • This easy, circular breath can be learned in a single session.
    What If I fall Asleep?

    With the support of us as facilitators, we will guide you through specific techniques to keep you awake.  With that, it important to come to the session rested, as this will assist in your ability to be present.

    Is There A Set Class Schedule?

    We offer breathwork sessions monthly in Calgary, as well tour Southern Alberta often sharing this practice in Claresholm, Lethbridge, Pincher Creek and soon to be more.

    What If I Have To Use The Washroom During a breathwork session?

    We do have a break in between the theory to the actual session. There will be enough time for everyone to use the washroom at that time. If you do need to go during your session that is more than okay.

    What If I Have To Leave Early?

    The breathwork session requires you to be there the entire time to receive its full benefits. We take pride in time impeccability, so we always start on time, finishing at the time stated.

    Do I need to Pre-Register?

    Yes, pre-registration is required to confirm your spot in the workshop. Conscious Breathwork is a facilitated practice, and knowing the number of participants will let us know how many facilitators are required to give you the most supportive experience.

    Contemporary Dance FAQ

    What Are The Different Levels of Contemporary Dance and Choreography Classes?

    Levels: Contemporary Dance and Choreography is divided into 3 levels: Introductory, Intermediate and Advanced.

    • Introductory: You have movement experience, such as yoga, ecstatic dance, sports or other related physical skills. You have never taken a formal dance class and you are ready to learn a new way of moving. You can expect movement sequences that enhance your kinesthetic awareness, focus on alignment and dive into the philosophies of embodiment.
    • Intermediate: You have a specialized movement practice or certification. Such as 200-500 hrs Yoga training, you are a movement teacher, personal trainer or have previous formal dance training. You can expect to learn physically and mentally challenging movement sequences. We will work towards increasing strength and flexibility, through the lens of artistry.
    • Advanced: This class is meant for experienced movement practitioners. You do not need to have previous dance training, but it is recommended. If you have taken the Inner Journeys Contemporary Dance and Choreography class before, you are welcome to speak with Kyra Newton or Kylee Dawn about whether or not this class is right for you, prior to registration. If you feel this level is suitable for you, please do not hesitate to speak with Inner Journeys about attending one of the classes as a drop-in.
    What Do I Wear To Class?
      • We recommend that you bring multiple layers. For example, a long sleeve shirt to wear over top of a tank top or t-shirt, this will help you protect your shoulders while we are learning new floor techniques.
      • Socks that go above the ankle are suitable for dance, as they do not slip off.
      • Please tie your hair back, for your own safety.
      • We request that you remove all jewelry. Including necklaces, bracelets, watches, sharp rings and large earrings.
      • Pants are more suitable compared to shorts, as we often explore floor work on our knees and extra padding can be more comfortable.
      • Knee pads are also a great addition and can be used when necessary.
      • If you have fallen arches or find your feet are sore during movement, please feel free to wear dance shoes. Jazz shoes, ballet shoes or modern toe thongs are all acceptable.
      What Do I Bring To Class?
        • Water bottle
        • Yoga mat if you would like it for beginning or end meditation
        • Toe tape, as a precaution
        • Extra hair elastics
        • Healthy snack for refueling after class
        • Journal/notebook and pen to document any notes regarding class material or choreography
